Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2022, $750,000)

Kings Against Violence Initiative (KAVI), working in partnership with a consortium of nonprofit capacity-building organizations in New York State, is proposing to conduct a statewide initiative to strengthen the infrastructure and systems of community-based organizations that are conducting community violence intervention programs (CBOs/CVIs) and hospital-based violence intervention programs (HVIPs) to more effectively provide services to communities. CBOs/CVIs and HVIPs are a major source of effective violence intervention and prevention service programming throughout NYS, yet they have historically been underfunded and lacked the organizational resources, infrastructure, and support needed to meet the current needs of the communities they serve or expand their work to address increases or emerging issues. The past decade has seen a steady rise in violence, particularly gun violence and violent incidents among youth.  The rate of increase in violence in New York City and other large cities in NYS requires a strategic response which includes the strengthening of CBO/CVIs and HVIPs and expansion of programs.

The proposed NYS Center for Strengthening Community Violence Intervention Programs, proposed by Kings Against Violence Initiatives, Inc (KAVI) will provide training and technical assistance to strengthen management, fiscal, and evaluation systems for CBOs/CVIs and HVIPs, and also improve the quality of care provided by providers by building their capacity through trainings and technical assistance in Trauma-informed Care, Restorative Justice, Healing, Circles, Anti-Racist Care, Evidence-based Interventions, Program Evalaution, and more.
