Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $178,870)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The County of Ventura will use the grant funds to reduce their DNA backlog in the Ventura County Sheriff's Forensic Sciences Laboratory (FSL). Currently, FSL has had a difficult time keeping up with the demand for services, particularly in the area of DNA analysis. The County will fund operational expenditures and supplies within the DNA section of the Forensic Sciences Laboratory, as well as for training for the forensic scientists assigned to the DNA section. FSL is a full-service laboratory supporting all law-enforcement agencies in Ventura County.
