Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $223,587)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The USTA Tennis and Education Foundation will support Aces for Kids which provides quality after-school and out of school programming for youth. The goal of the program is to combat school truancy, poor academic performance, gang activity, underage drinking, and drug abuse through curricula that stresses academic improvement, healthy lifestyles, sports activity, and life skills in a safe nurturing environment for at-risk youth. Funding will be directed to program support for approximately 14-non-profit youth development organizations across the nation, with the foundation serving as the fiscal agent, responsible for ensuring that funded programs coordinate existing community resources to provide quality after school and out of school programming. These sub-awards will be selected from a competitive application and review process, which will include site visits conducted by the foundation to determine eligibility.
