The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.
The Carmel Police Department will continue the operation of the Hamilton/Boone County Drug Task Force, which has been in operation since 1990. Hamilton and Boone Counties are located on the border of Marion County, which contains the City of Indianapolis, making the area a prime thoroughfare for drug trafficking. The Task Force's goals are to reduce illegal drugs and weapons, and arrest and prosecute individuals involved in crimes, primarily by focusing on mid- and large-scale dealers and repeat and violent offenders through the acquisition of intelligence and confidential informants. Grant funds will be used to maintain the lease on the covert operations office and for confidential funds to illicit criminal intelligence and work with confidential informants.
