Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $670,671)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grants Program (Byrne Discretionary Program) helps local communities improve the capacity of local justice systems and provides for national support efforts. This project is authorized and funded through a line item in the FY 08 Congressional Budget. Funds should be used for purposes recommended by Congress.

The Farleigh Dickinson University (FDU) will develop and deliver comprehensive educational training to enhance the experience and further the credentials of the School Resource Officers (SROs). FDU opened a new Cybercrime Training Lab (CTL) to provide educational support for both preventative and responsive security services to those that protect the vulnerable populations attending schools nationwide. The CTL was designed and planned to be an educational support system for the Regional Computer Forensics Laboratory (RCFL) in Hamilton, NJ, which is jointly operated by the New Jersey State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation as part of the national network of RCFLs. FDU will expand their technological capabilities and reach out to an essential yet underserved population by developing a program that focuses on identifying and satisfying the needs of SROs and college or university safety officers.
