Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $175,000)

The purposes of the FY 2009 Tribal Courts Assistance Program (TCAP) are to develop new tribal courts, improve the operations of existing tribal courts, and provide training and technical assistance for tribal court staff. The TCAP program goals are to provide planning grants that will focus on establishing tribal courts by supporting the development of comprehensive strategy and implementation plans, provide grants for existing tribal court systems to enhance tribal court services, and provide planning grants for tribal justice system strategies.

The Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians will hire a part-time probation officer, purchase program equipment and supplies, and fund training opportunities for program staff. The Red Lake Tribal Court will improve the information sharing technology of the Red Lake Tribal Court. They will research, identify, and procure appropriate hardware and software to provide enhanced integration of tribal justice information systems. The goal is to enhance and expand probation services and upgrade court information technology. CA/NCF
