Training and resources developed and delivered by the grantees has allowed the field to: (a) develop and implement policies to use existing intelligence and investigative resources to improve officer safety; (b) teach techniques for identifying/recognizing vehicles with hidden compartments, used to transport illegal drugs and contraband; (c) to discuss and demonstrate techniques to identify/recognize armed suspects and their characteristics; (d) present techniques for handling gun crime cases have been very well received by the law enforcement community; and (e) improve collaboration between agencies and the efficiency of investigations and programming.
Council of State Governments/American Probation and Parole Association (CSG/APPA) was funded to develop a training to help corrections and law enforcement officers stay safe in the field, which includes training on: safety in search and seizure; helping law enforcement personnel identify correctional resources that can contribute to investigations (e.g., statutory authority, databases, information sharing, etc.); collaborations between law enforcements and corrections agencies to address gun crime and gang violence; improving probation and parole practices by developing and promoting the most effective recidivism reduction community-based programs; and helping law enforcement personnel understand the unique value of information and intelligence available to Security Threat Group personnel (Gang Investigators in correctional facilities) that can be beneficial to law enforcement.
