Description

This program seeks to increase access to evidence-based prevention and treatment, reduce overdose deaths, and support increased access to evidence-based substance use disorder (SUD) treatment and recovery support services, including medication-assisted treatment (MAT), to treat incarcerated individuals.

The program assists states with developing and implementing residential SUD treatment programs within state correctional facilities, as well as within local correctional and detention facilities, in which persons are incarcerated for a period of time sufficient to permit SUD treatment. Given the strong nexus between substance use and mental health disorders in prisons and jails, the Bureau of Justice Assistance is committed to ensuring that program funding be used to treat underlying mental health disorders in addition to SUDs.
